RCD Dragoon Helmet c.1912
The RCD were issued dragoon helmets about 1912, replacing the universal helmet in use since 1876. This example has the full liner intact, the original chin scales have the leather backing, and the black plume is from the era made with horse hair, retaining its rosette on the crown. The cap badge is early manufacture with the Springbok badge. The shell has no dents and bright colour.
All of these helmets usually have an issue: dents, missing liner, fake or modern parts, split back, missing parts. The only issue with this helmet is someone drilled extra holes in the front in a circle for some reason. With the badge on, it is hidden from view, but it affects the value and is anchored with larger washers to secure the plate. One wonders if it was a civilian who did this mounting some bizarre décor on its front. That said, it is a handsome example on any ones mantel, but could use some more polishing.
