Artillery Busby c.1870s

Offered is an early Artillery Busby with its original maker marked liner and chinstrap. The Red cloth bag worn on the crown has one moth nip. The fur is 95% present, with the typical bald spots on the very crown that are common to Busby. This doesn't distract from the appearance of the headgear because of the light colour of the fur. These caps were issued as early at 1857, but they were very tall in stature, with time they were reduced in height to make them more practical for wear and cut cost. It is taller than later patterns and I would suggest it is c. 1870. There are no accommodations for mounting badges and plumes, not surprising for not all militia Battery could afford the bells and whistles. Canadian Artillery Grenades were mounted either on the left side of the busby like its British cousins, or on the front crown for a different look. Units like the 3rd Montreal Battery wore their badges in this manner. Overall a nice affordable example of an early Artillery busby.
