Early Senior NCO Sword 1822-45

Swords were purchased on the market by serving Officers. The government produced swords for NCOs in the various arms that needed them, the infantry for the use of Sergeant Majors only. Here is offered an early transitional sword with its original issue scabbard. THis particular sword has had a rough history with poor care and numerous changes. The blade is chipped several places along its length but is well marked by inspector. NCO blades were plain. The brass hilt has the Victoria Cypher on the hilt proper. The fish skin grip with its wire wrap is sound and intact. The hilt however has been modified. It is difficult to tell if this was done deliberately to remove damaged bar and guard or if it was removed deliberately to reduce chaffing and wear to the uniform and allow the owner an unobstructed inner side to the grip. The patina would suggest this work was done a long time ago and with some care in the final look and finish. Regardless, the original configuration of the hilt has been changed. The scabbard is missing its drag and the leather has seen better days, but the two other components with their rings are present and it functions in its intended role. A sword that has seen better days, but hard to find. Priced accordingly.
