5th Royal Scots 1896 Scarlet Officer's Cutaway Frock Coat
Offered is a Highland Officer's private purchase 5 button, serge cutaway frock coat. The Officer gilt buttons are marked to the 5th Royal Scots (later the Royal Highlanders of Canada or Black Watch). It has Captains rank on the blue epaulettes and has the standard blue collars, and cuff facings for infantry. With these buttons we can date the tunic to approximately 1896 to 1906. The tunic appears to have had collar dogs, now missing. This example is in fine condition with a very plush liner, and scarlet serge cloth with no discolouration. The two chest pockets are not pleated. This very tunic is illustrated in "Scarlet to Khaki" by Clive Laws Page 76.
The tunic would be worn with Scottish trues (trousers in the government plaid) and either the white helmet or the glengarry cap and a set of Sam Brown kit for the field. These tunics were worn on field exercises and by those who reported for duty to serve in South Africa in Halifax 1899 before their Khaki issue. They were eventually phased out by the 1903 Khaki version of this tunic.
